The following are important events and happenings for the week of November 1st. Upcoming Events
National FFA Champions! Last week, eight FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo and represent the state of Texas to compete for national championship titles in the Agricultural Communications and the Nursery / Landscape events. Both teams bested all of the competition in their respective contests and were named National FFA Champions on the big stage at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday, October 29th! Check out our James Madison FFA Facebook page for photos and videos from our trip to the National FFA Convention & Expo. 2021-2022 James Madison FFA Dues One of the expectations for every AMP student is to be an active participant in the AMP. Active participation can be achieved by becoming a member of the James Madison FFA (the student leadership organization for AMP students) and participating in any of the literally 100+ FFA activities that will be offered this school year. FFA dues are $20.00 for the entire school year and can be paid (cash or check) in the AMP Administration office. With membership in the FFA, AMP students will have access to outstanding leadership and career development opportunities, supervised agricultural experiences, degrees, awards, and scholarships. FFA members will also receive a James Madison FFA commemorative t-shirt. SAE Grant Programs are Now Available Two opportunities are now available for AMP students to submit applications to compete for SAE grants. National FFA Association SAE Grant Program Deadline: November 15, 2021 The National FFA Association has opened the application window for the 2021 Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) Grant Program from now until November 15, 2021. This year, the National FFA has 387 grants to award. In 2020, almost 50% of applicants who completed the application process received a grant. James Madison FFA Booster Club SAE Grant Program Deadline: November 1, 2021 The James Madison FFA Booster Club is pleased to announce that the 2021 SAE Grant Program is now available for James Madison FFA members to make application for funding. The purpose of the SAE Grant program is to provide FFA members with an opportunity to establish, improve, and/or maintain their SAE program through financial assistance. The James Madison FFA Booster Club is responsible for reviewing, awarding and administering the SAE Grant program. The FFA Booster Club will determine the final amount of funds awarded to a James Madison FFA member not to exceed $500 per awarded grant. The application period for the 2021-2022 school year is now through November 1, 2021. For more information and qualifications and to download an application, please visit the following page on the AMP website: http://agrisciencemagnetprogram.weebly.com/sae-grant-fund.html Annual James Madison FFA Chili Cook-off The 2021 James Madison FFA Chili Cook-Off will be held in conjunction with the monthly meeting for the James Madison FFA Booster Club on Thursday, November 4th. We will have an adult and student divisions to the cook-off. So FFA members and their parents/guardians are both encouraged to participate by entering their favorite chili recipe to compete for the title of "Chili Cook-Off Champion"! Students and adults can submit their Chili Cook-Off entry online by going to: http://agrisciencemagnetprogram.weebly.com/chili-cook-off.html. There is no cost to enter, so go ahead and click that link to earn your bragging rights! Contestants may check-in and set up their chili cook-off entries from 4:30pm to 5:30pm on Thursday, November 4th in the AMP Commons. Chili must be ready for judging and serving by 6:00pm. FFA Dodgeball Tournament - November 4th The next chapter FFA meeting for students of the AMP will happen on Thursday, November 4th at 4:30PM in the AMP Arena. This month's chapter FFA meeting will feature America's favorite past time, Dodgeball! Entry forms for the Dodgeball tournament are available in the AMP Administration Office and the deadline to enter is Tuesday, November 2nd. The FFA Dodgeball Tournament will be supporting the San Antonio Food Bank as a community service project for the month of November. United States Service Academy Nomination Application The United States Service Academy Nomination Application Submission Deadline for the Texas 20th Congressional District is on Friday, November 5, 2021 at 6:00pm Central Standard Time. The academies are considered among the country’s most prestigious institutions, and gaining admission is rigorous and competitive. Students are required to apply to the academy of their choice directly and pass a general fitness and medical exam. However, before the application process is complete, each student must acquire a congressional nomination. Attached to the blog is a copy of the Service Academy Nomination Application for cadets entering Fall 2022. You may submit your completed application packet by mail along with official academic transcripts and standardized test scores to my San Antonio District Office located at 727 E. Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard, Suite B-128, San Antonio, Texas 78206. Applicants are encouraged to have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and be of strong moral character. An applicant must be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, and have no dependents. Acceptance of a service academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, consisting of four years at an academy and five years of active duty service. Community Service Opportunity The San Antonio Foundation for Equine Education (SAFEE) is a 501(c)(3) that helps people who want equine experiences but do not have access to horses. Currently, they are sponsoring a polo team with students from several local high schools, providing inner-city students with field trips, and are sponsoring an equestrian team from Trinity University. SAFEE is in need of student volunteers for horse shows that they are hosting on December 4, 2021, January 29, 2022, and March 5, 2022. Students are welcome to work one or both shifts for these events – 8:00AM to 11:30AM and/or 11:30AM to 3:00PM To volunteer, students should contact Julie Hamilton directly via email at [email protected] or by text/phone at (210) 827-4977. Guidance and Counseling News Extended After Hours Virtual Tutoring NEISD is providing extended after hours tutoring for high school students from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday through Thursday. Tutoring is available in the following core courses: English I, II, III & IV, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, OnRamps Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. NEISD College Night The NEISD College Night will be held on Wednesday, November 17th at Blossom Athletic Center from 6:00PM to 8:00PM. College and University representatives from Texas and throughout the nation will have informational booths available to visit with prospective students. Also, Financial Aid sessions will be held the same evening to assist families with completing the FAFSA. Scholarship Opportunities GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Deadline: January 6, 2022 Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education. Each year, the Program selects numerous recipients to receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years – up to $40,000 total per recipient. Awards are for undergraduate study and may be used for education-related expenses, including tuition, fees, books, supplies, room, and board. In addition, Scholars are invited to participate in a special awards program and receive ongoing leadership-development support. Sam J. Riklin Rotary Diploma Plus Program Deadline: January 24, 2022 The purpose of this program is to provide financial assistance to students who are at risk of not graduating from High School due to financial concerns or hardships. This is needs based and is not based on your academic performance. If you are selected, you will receive a $1,000 stipend during your senior year in high school. Qualifications 1) You must be classified as a junior during the 2021-2022 school year. 2) Attend a high school in Bexar County. Corn Producers / Corn Growers Scholarships Deadline: January 31, 2022 Students can apply to scholarships from both the Texas Corn Producers (TCP) and the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) with one application. You can find more details on TCP and NCGA scholarships, as well as access the application on their website at: https://texascorn.org/education/scholarships/ Texas PTA Scholarship Deadline: November 15, 2021 Texas PTA offers $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Texas who will be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university or a technical institute for the summer, fall, and/or spring terms immediately following applicant’s high school graduation. Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarship Deadline: November 15, 2021 Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Eligibility:
