The following are important events and happenings for the week of October 28th.

National FFA Convention & Expo
This week, ten FFA members will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo from October 29th through November 2nd. The James Madison FFA members will be representing the state of Texas as they compete for national championship titles in the Agricultural Issues Forum event, the Agriscience Fair competition, and the Agriculture Education Proficiency. The National FFA Convention & Expo will be live streamed throughout the week and you can find the schedule by going to https://convention.ffa.org/.

North East Ag Fair a Huge Success
The 9th Annual North East Ag Fair took place on Saturday, October 26th and it was great day in which the efforts and talents of AMP students were showcased through the various events. A total of 19 custom trophy belt buckles were awarded to students that competed in the Ag Mechanics, Baked Goods, and Photography contests, as well as those students that exhibited their livestock animals in the Fall Challenge Livestock Show. Students also put their culinary skills on display in the BBQ Cook-off Contest earning bragging rights for the best brisket, chicken, and pork ribs.
​

Thank you to all of our vendors and buckle sponsors for their generous support of the North East Ag Fair. Also, many thanks to the numerous parents and alumni that volunteered their time and talents to organize and work the Ag Fair. Upcoming District and Area FFA Leadership Development Events Competitions
For the past two months, AMP students have been training and working towards the FFA Leadership Development Events (LDEs) to be held next month. The first level of competition is the Alamo District FFA LDEs to be held on Thursday, November 7th at the Agriscience Magnet Program Complex.
Students that qualify at the Alamo District FFA LDEs will advance to compete in the Area 7 FFA LDEs that will take place at Blanco High School on Wednesday, November 20th.

James Madison FFA Dodgeball Tournament
The next chapter FFA meeting for students of the AMP will happen on Monday, November 11th at 4:30pm in the AMP Arena. This month's chapter FFA meeting will feature America's favorite past time, Dodgeball! Entry forms for the Dodgeball tournament are available in the AMP Administration Office and the deadline to enter is Friday, November 8th.

Fall Gala Social - Tickets on Sale Now!
Tickets are on sale now for the annual James Madison FFA Booster Club Fall Gala Social to be held on Saturday, November 16th from 6:00pm to 11:00pm at the Voigt Center in Hollywood Park. Tickets are $40.00 per person and include dinner, open bar, live and silent auctions, music, and much more.

Tickets can be purchased ONLINE or at the following Booster Club events: Nov 11th - James Madison FFA Chapter Meeting/Dodgeball Tournament. 

​Guidance and Counseling News
ASVAB
The ASVAB exam will be given at Madison HS on October 30th. The ASVAB exam is a great and useful tool that can help your student to identify and explore a career path that is right for them. 10th- 12th grade students can sign up to take this free exam in the counseling office with Mrs. Avalos. The last day to sign up is on October 28th. Seating is limited so do not delay.

NEISD College Night - October 30th
The annual NEISD College Night will take place at Blossom Athletic Center on October 30th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Over 100 colleges and universities will be in attendance and financial aid sessions will be held for parents.

AP Test Updates
  • The Fall Student Registration Payment NEW Deadline is November 4, 2019, at 5pm for the May 2020 AP exams. 
  • Student Fees: $40 for non-F/R exams; $20 for F/R exams; additional fee of $40 will be assessed for ordering an exam after November 15th. (Exception is 2nd Semester courses such as AP Government, AP Eco, and AP Psych.) 
  • There will be no refunds after November 15, 2019; if students miss their AP exams in May, they will not be refunded $40. For those students who paid the reduced fee of $20 and miss an exam, they will owe an additional fee of $20 per exam.
  • If students choose to pay by credit card, they will need to log in to the Skyward Portal. 
  • If students do not choose to pay by credit card, they may pay with Cash, Cashier’s Check, or Money Order; they will need to see Mrs. Avalos in the counseling center to pay with this method. 

FAFSA
All seniors planning to go to college/university should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to see if you qualify for grants, loans and/or institution scholarships. The FAFSA opened on October 1st and is available at www.fafsa.gov.

If you encounter any problems or need assistance, we are here to help you complete the application on Wednesday, November 6 from 4:20 – 7:00 p.m. in the Madison Library. Please see the attachment on what to bring.

AMP College and Career Fair - November 22nd
The annual AMP College and Career Fair will be held on Friday, November 22nd from 11:30am to 2:30pm in the AMP Complex. Post-secondary representatives from Texas universities, colleges and technical schools will be in attendance to provide AMP students with information about educational opportunities in agriculture after high school. Representatives will also be in attendance from agencies and employers to share career opportunities with AMP students in the areas of agriculture.

Scholarship Opportunity
GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship
Deadline: January 3, 2020

$10,000 scholarship that is renewable for up to 3 more years. Applicants should have strong leadership skills, work ethic, and character along with strong academic record.


2020 Coolidge Scholarship Application
Deadline: January 16, 2020
The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that may be used by recipients for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any high school junior who plans on enrolling in college in the fall of 2021 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (unfortunately current high school seniors are not eligible to apply).

Coolidge Scholars are selected based primarily on academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: an interest in public policy, an appreciation for and understanding of the values President Coolidge championed, as well as humility and service.

2020 San Antonio A&M Club Foundation Opportunity Award Scholarship 
Deadline: March 5, 2020
The San Antonio A&M Club, through its Foundation, awards academic scholarships to high school students from Bexar County who have been unconditionally accepted to Texas A&M University at either the College Station or Galveston Campus. Eligible students must reside in Bexar County or attend high school in Bexar County at the time of graduation. This scholarship is awarded by the San Antonio A&M Club Foundation and is over and above any scholarship for which you might apply at the University level.

In April of 2020, they will award eight $12,000 scholarships to freshmen entering Texas A&M for the 2020 Fall Semester. The scholarship award totals $12,000 and is distributed at a rate of $1,500 each semester for the student’s first 8 semesters, not including summer sessions. Recipients must maintain the minimum standards set by the San Antonio A&M Club Foundation in order to continue to receive the scholarship.

Earn a Scholarship through NASCAR
NASCAR Clint Bowyer and DEKALB are teaming up to help students cross their "finish line" with the new Left Turns for Learning agricultural scholarship. Eligible FFA high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors pursuing an ag-related degree can apply Nov. 1 through Jan. 15, 2020 at FFA.org/scholarships. 2019 North East Ag Fair
Everyone is cordially invited to the 9th Annual North East Ag Fair to be held on Saturday, October 26th from 8:00am to 4:00pm at the AMP Complex.

The purpose of the Ag Fair is to engage our North East community in a day full of activities showcasing the skills of students in the AMP through events such as livestock exhibition, agricultural mechanics skill-a-thon, BBQ cook-off, and a Baked Goods and Photography contest. The day will also host retail vendors and a Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume contest to ensure something for the whole family. 

Besides the North East Ag Fair Livestock Show, there are several other ways that students can participate and compete during the Ag Fair: "The Fastest Torch in the West" Contest, Ag Mechanics Build-Off Contest, BBQ Cook-Off Competition, Baked Goods Contest, and Agriculture Photography Contest. Entry forms and information about these contest opportunities for all students can be found on the AMP website at http://agrisciencemagnetprogram.weebly.com/north-east-ag-fair.html. 

The FFA Booster Club is also putting out an ALL CALL to interested retail vendors that would like to sell their goods and/or services at the 2019 Ag Fair. So if you or someone you know would like to be a vendor, click HERE for a retail vendor registration packet.

FFA Booster Club is Seeking Buckle Sponsorships
The FFA Booster Club is in need of individual and business sponsorships for the custom trophy belt buckles that will be awarded this year at the North East Ag Fair, the Fall Challenge Lamb and Goat Prospect Show, the Showmanship Shootout, and the AMP Awards Gala.

In all, 36 belt buckles will be awarded this year and the sponsorship cost is $150 per buckle. Sponsors may make their donation online at https://squareup.com/market/james-madison-ffa-booster.

Tip of the Week
Student eligibility to participate in extracurricular activities will be determined by the grades students earned at the end of the 1st Nine Weeks on Friday, October 18th.
If a student was previously ineligible and they are passing all courses at the end of the 1st Nine Weeks, the student will regain their eligibility at 4:15pm on Friday, October 25th. However, if a student was previously eligible and they have one or more failing grades at the end of the 1st Nine Weeks, the student will lose their eligibility at 4:15pm on Friday, October 25th.
Please note, students that fail a Pre-AP or AP course for the 1st Nine Weeks may submit a waiver to protect their eligibility status. An eligibility waiver may be picked up in the Assistant Principal's office beginning on Monday, October 21st and are due back in the Assistant Principal's office by 4:15pm on Thursday, October 24th.

Scholarship Opportunity
Coca-Cola Scholars Program
Deadline: October 31, 2019

Achievement based scholarship recognizing students for their leadership and service.

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program
Deadline: October 31, 2019

High school seniors who plan to major in computer science can apply to work for the NSA while attending college full time, receiving up to $30,000 per year for tuition and fees in addition to a year round salary. Students will work at NSA for 12 weeks during the summer.

Voice of Democracy
Deadline: October 31, 2019

A national audio-essay scholarship competition for any high school grade level students. Participants record their essays on the announced patriotic theme (What Makes America Great). The state winner receives an all expense paid trip to Washington DC and competes for a $30,000 scholarship.

Texas PTSA Scholarships
Deadline: November 15, 2019

Texas PTSA awards $1,000 to eligible high school seniors. Applicants must be a member of the PTSA at James Madison HS.

Guidance and Counseling News
PSAT/SAT - October 16th
All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16th during the school day. Seniors that opted into taking the SAT will also be testing during the school day on October 16th. Seniors that have chosen not to take the SAT will have late arrival at 12:00 noon.

Texas A&M - Chevron Engineering Academy Information Session - October 26th
Are you a student interested in pursuing a degree and career in the many fields of Engineering? If so, you are invited to the Texas A&M - Chevron Engineering Academy Information Session on Saturday, October 26th at 1:00pm at Cafe' College in downtown San Antonio. Come and learn how to start your engineering degree locally in San Antonio!

Norman Vestal Memorial Rotary Scholarship
The Rotary Club of San Antonio is now accepting applications for the 2020-2021 Norman Vestal Memorial Rotary Scholarship.  Please see the attached flier for more information.  

ELIGIBILITY
•           Enrolled in a high school in Bexar County and classified as a Senior during the 2019-2020 school year.
•           Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
•           Cannot be the child or grandchild of a Rotarian.
•           Must plan to attend college during the 2020-2021 academic year at an accredited college or university.
•           Must be pursuing a degree in Agri-Life (to include Agri-Business)

DEADLINE - The deadline to apply for the 2020-2021 Norman Vestal Memorial Rotary Scholarship is Friday, March 6, 2020. Applications received after the deadline will not be accepted.

ABOUT NORMAN VESTAL
Norman Vestal was a tireless supporter of young men and women from our community who demonstrated an interest in Agriculture. He worked as a County Agent for the Texas Agriculture Extension office for over 30 years and was awarded County Agent Emeritus by the Texas A&M Board of Regents upon his retirement.

To honor Mr. Vestal’s commitment to Rotary and his support of future agriculture leaders, this scholarship was started in 2002.

TAMU Soil & Crop Sciences Scholarship
The Soil & Crop Sciences Department at Texas A&M University has a great opportunity for students wanting to major in Plant & Environmental Soil Science and Turfgrass Science.
 
The department is awarding $16,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen and $8000 scholarships to transfer students.  Please see the attached flier for information about the scholarships and the application process.  You can also find the information at this link:

AMP Happenings for the Week of October 7th

Howdy AMP families and students,

The following are important events and happenings for the week of October 7th.

​Annual James Madison FFA Chili Cook-off
The 2019 James Madison FFA Chili Cook-Off will be held in conjunction with the monthly meeting for the James Madison FFA Booster Club on Monday, October 7th. We will again have an adult and student divisions to the cook-off. So FFA members and their parents/guardians are both encouraged to participate by entering their favorite chili recipe to compete for the title of "Chili Cook-Off Champion"!

Students and adults can submit their Chili Cook-Off entry online by going to: http://agrisciencemagnetprogram.weebly.com/chili-cook-off.html. There is no cost to enter, so go ahead and click that link  to earn your bragging rights!

Contestants may check-in and set up their chili cook-off entries from 4:30pm to 5:30pm on Monday, October 7th in the AMP Commons. Chili must be ready for judging and serving by 6:00pm.

FFA Livestock Project T-shirts and Senior T-shirts Have Arrived
The FFA Livestock Project t-shirts and Senior T-shirts have arrived and will be available for pick up at the October 7th Chili Cook-off and FFA Booster Club general meeting from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. Any merchandise not picked up on October 7th will be made available for pick up again on October 19th at the Fall Challenge Goat and Lamb Prospect Show.

High School Early Dismissal - October 11th
Students will be released at 2:15pm on Friday, October 11th for staff professional development. The modified bell schedule for the day is attached at the bottom of this post.


Student Holiday - Monday, October 14th
Students will NOT have school on Monday, October 14th due to it being a district-wide staff development day.

Besides the North East Ag Fair Livestock Show, there are several other ways that students can participate and compete during the Ag Fair: "The Fastest Torch in the West" Contest, Ag Mechanics Build-Off Contest, BBQ Cook-Off Competition, Baked Goods Contest, and Agriculture Photography Contest. Entry forms and information about these contest opportunities for all students can be found on the AMP website at http://agrisciencemagnetprogram.weebly.com/north-east-ag-fair.html. 

The FFA Booster Club is also putting out an ALL CALL to interested retail vendors that would like to sell their goods and/or services at the 2019 Ag Fair. So if you or someone you know would like to be a vendor, click HERE for a retail vendor registration packet.

FFA Booster Club is Seeking Buckle Sponsorships
The FFA Booster Club is in need of individual and business sponsorships for the custom trophy belt buckles that will be awarded this year at the North East Ag Fair, the Fall Challenge Lamb and Goat Prospect Show, the Showmanship Shootout, and the AMP Awards Gala.

In all, 36 belt buckles will be awarded this year and the sponsorship cost is $150 per buckle. Sponsors may make their donation online at https://squareup.com/market/james-madison-ffa-booster.

Fund Your SAE
2019 National FFA SAE Grants are now available to apply. FFA members in grades 8–12 can apply for 176 grants of $1,000 each to start or expand a supervised agricultural experience (SAE). Read the flier for details. The deadline to apply is November 15, 2019, at 8 p.m. EST.

Also, the James Madison Booster Club has made their SAE Grant applications available until October 31, 2019 for AMP students to apply for up to $500 to support a SAE. Click HERE for more information and the application.

AMP Dual Credit TSI Testing - October 12th
Students needing to take the TSI exam on Saturday, October 12th for Dual Credit admission, have until Friday, October 11th at 12:00 noon to sign up with Mrs. Guerrero for the exam and pay the fee of $20 or $5 for free/reduced lunch students.

PSAT - October 16th
All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, October 16th during the school day. Seniors that have chosen not to take the SAT will have late arrival at 12:00 noon.

Texas A&M - Chevron Engineering Academy Information Session - October 26th
Are you a student interested in pursuing a degree and career in the many fields of Engineering? If so, you are invited to the Texas A&M - Chevron Engineering Academy Information Session on Saturday, October 26th at 1:00pm at Cafe' College in downtown San Antonio. Come and learn how to start your engineering degree locally in San Antonio!

NEISD College Night - October 30th
The annual NEISD College Night will take place at Blossom Athletic Center on October 30th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Over 100 colleges and universities will be in attendance and financial aid sessions will be held for parents.
