Howdy AMP families and students, The following are important events and happenings for the week of February 7th. Upcoming Events
UPDATE - 2022 North East Ag Fair Premium Auction Donor Lists AMP students that participated in the 2022 North East Ag Fair Premium Auction this past week were emailed on Friday, January 21st their list of donors for their auction lot and instructions for writing "Thank You" notes, cards, or letters to their donors. Students should check the email account they used when creating their online auction account with StockShowAuctions.com for the donor list and instructions. "Thank You's" are due in the AMP Administration office no later than Monday, February 7th. Potential Steer Feeders Meeting - February 7th Mrs. McMullan will be hosting a meeting on Monday, February 7th at 6:30pm in AG125 for students and their parents that are interested in raising and exhibiting a market steer project next school year. February James Madison FFA Booster Club General Meeting The February general meeting of the James Madison FFA Booster Club has been rescheduled for Thursday, February 10th at 6:30PM in the AMP Commons. The major agenda items include a recap of the 2022 North East Ag Fair and Premium Auction, nominating committee for 2022-2023 executive board positions, and discussion and details about the upcoming Spring Scholarship Fundraiser Social on Saturday, March 19th. 2022 - 2023 Course Selection Process Students are able to enter their 2022-2023 course selections now through February 18th. All course selections will be entered by the student using Skyward Student Access. Mrs. Suarez will be meeting with all 9th and 10th grade AMP students the week of February 7th through their Social Studies class to provide guidance on course selection and dual credit opportunities for next school year. PVAMU - 2022 Summer Programs for Youth in Agriculture Prairie View A&M University is excited to announce various summer programs for youth in agriculture to be hosted by the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences. Please see the flier attached to this post below for information about the various opportunities and how to sign up for them. AgDiscovery: Investing in the Future of American Agriculture AgDiscovery is a summer outreach program designed to help teenagers explore careers in plant and animal science, wildlife management, agribusiness, and much more! The program allows students to live on a college campus and learn about agriculture from university professors, scientists, and administrative professionals who work for the U.S. Government in a variety of fields. They study the life cycles and habits of insects (entomologists); research micro-organisms, such as bacteria and viruses (biotechnologists); examine cells and tissues under a microscope to identify diseases (plant pathologists); work to conserve and manage wild animals and their habitats (wildlife biologists); carry out animal health programs (veterinarians); provide education on the humane care and treatment of animals (veterinarians and animal care inspectors); and manage the business aspects of protecting plants and animals (agribusiness). This 2- to 4-week summer outreach program for 2022 targets middle and high school students who are interested in learning more about plants, animals, and agribusiness. Students chosen to participate in AgDiscovery will gain experience through hands-on labs, workshops, and field trips. Students will also participate in character- and team-building activities and a variety of other events. There is no cost to attend the AgDiscovery 2022 summer program. Tuition, room and board, lab supplies, meals, and activity fees will be covered by APHIS. Students selected for the program are only responsible for costs that may be associated with traveling to the university campus on opening day and returning home at the conclusion of the program on closing day. Guidance and Counseling News Spring 2022 ASVAB Exam - March 2nd The spring ASVAB exam is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, 2022 from 9:00am to 12:00 noon in the James Madison HS Library. Students in the 10th - 12th grades can register to take the exam by seeing Mrs. Avalos in the counseling office before 4:00pm on Friday, February 25th. Attention Seniors The completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required by all graduating seniors as of the 2021-2022 school year. Extended After Hours Virtual Tutoring NEISD is providing extended after hours tutoring for high school students from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday through Thursday. Tutoring is available in the following core courses: English I, II, III & IV, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, OnRamps Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Scholarship Opportunities The USDA 1890 National Scholars Program Deadline: February 15, 2022 The USDA 1890 National Scholars Program offers scholarships to U.S. citizens who are seeking a bachelor's degree at one of the nineteen 1890 Land-Grant Universities in the field of agriculture, food, natural resource sciences or other related disciplines. High school and current college students are eligible to apply for the USDA 1890 National Scholars Program which provides full tuition, fees, books, room and board, and a summer internship which may convert to full-time employment with USDA after graduation.
