National FFA Convention & Expo This week, ten FFA members will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the 92nd National FFA Convention & Expo from October 29th through November 2nd. The James Madison FFA members will be representing the state of Texas as they compete for national championship titles in the Agricultural Issues Forum event, the Agriscience Fair competition, and the Agriculture Education Proficiency. The National FFA Convention & Expo will be live streamed throughout the week and you can find the schedule by going to https://convention.ffa.org/. North East Ag Fair a Huge Success The 9th Annual North East Ag Fair took place on Saturday, October 26th and it was great day in which the efforts and talents of AMP students were showcased through the various events. A total of 19 custom trophy belt buckles were awarded to students that competed in the Ag Mechanics, Baked Goods, and Photography contests, as well as those students that exhibited their livestock animals in the Fall Challenge Livestock Show. Students also put their culinary skills on display in the BBQ Cook-off Contest earning bragging rights for the best brisket, chicken, and pork ribs. Thank you to all of our vendors and buckle sponsors for their generous support of the North East Ag Fair. Also, many thanks to the numerous parents and alumni that volunteered their time and talents to organize and work the Ag Fair. Upcoming District and Area FFA Leadership Development Events Competitions For the past two months, AMP students have been training and working towards the FFA Leadership Development Events (LDEs) to be held next month. The first level of competition is the Alamo District FFA LDEs to be held on Thursday, November 7th at the Agriscience Magnet Program Complex. Students that qualify at the Alamo District FFA LDEs will advance to compete in the Area 7 FFA LDEs that will take place at Blanco High School on Wednesday, November 20th. James Madison FFA Dodgeball Tournament The next chapter FFA meeting for students of the AMP will happen on Monday, November 11th at 4:30pm in the AMP Arena. This month's chapter FFA meeting will feature America's favorite past time, Dodgeball! Entry forms for the Dodgeball tournament are available in the AMP Administration Office and the deadline to enter is Friday, November 8th. Fall Gala Social - Tickets on Sale Now! Tickets are on sale now for the annual James Madison FFA Booster Club Fall Gala Social to be held on Saturday, November 16th from 6:00pm to 11:00pm at the Voigt Center in Hollywood Park. Tickets are $40.00 per person and include dinner, open bar, live and silent auctions, music, and much more. Tickets can be purchased ONLINE or at the following Booster Club events: Nov 11th - James Madison FFA Chapter Meeting/Dodgeball Tournament. Guidance and Counseling News ASVAB The ASVAB exam will be given at Madison HS on October 30th. The ASVAB exam is a great and useful tool that can help your student to identify and explore a career path that is right for them. 10th- 12th grade students can sign up to take this free exam in the counseling office with Mrs. Avalos. The last day to sign up is on October 28th. Seating is limited so do not delay. NEISD College Night - October 30th The annual NEISD College Night will take place at Blossom Athletic Center on October 30th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Over 100 colleges and universities will be in attendance and financial aid sessions will be held for parents. AP Test Updates
FAFSA All seniors planning to go to college/university should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to see if you qualify for grants, loans and/or institution scholarships. The FAFSA opened on October 1st and is available at www.fafsa.gov. If you encounter any problems or need assistance, we are here to help you complete the application on Wednesday, November 6 from 4:20 – 7:00 p.m. in the Madison Library. AMP College and Career Fair - November 22nd The annual AMP College and Career Fair will be held on Friday, November 22nd from 11:30am to 2:30pm in the AMP Complex. Post-secondary representatives from Texas universities, colleges and technical schools will be in attendance to provide AMP students with information about educational opportunities in agriculture after high school. Representatives will also be in attendance from agencies and employers to share career opportunities with AMP students in the areas of agriculture. Scholarship Opportunity GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Deadline: January 3, 2020 $10,000 scholarship that is renewable for up to 3 more years. Applicants should have strong leadership skills, work ethic, and character along with strong academic record. 2020 Coolidge Scholarship Application Deadline: January 16, 2020 The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that may be used by recipients for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any high school junior who plans on enrolling in college in the fall of 2021 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (unfortunately current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Coolidge Scholars are selected based primarily on academic excellence. Secondary criteria include: an interest in public policy, an appreciation for and understanding of the values President Coolidge championed, as well as humility and service. 2020 San Antonio A&M Club Foundation Opportunity Award Scholarship Deadline: March 5, 2020 The San Antonio A&M Club, through its Foundation, awards academic scholarships to high school students from Bexar County who have been unconditionally accepted to Texas A&M University at either the College Station or Galveston Campus. Eligible students must reside in Bexar County or attend high school in Bexar County at the time of graduation. This scholarship is awarded by the San Antonio A&M Club Foundation and is over and above any scholarship for which you might apply at the University level. In April of 2020, they will award eight $12,000 scholarships to freshmen entering Texas A&M for the 2020 Fall Semester. The scholarship award totals $12,000 and is distributed at a rate of $1,500 each semester for the student’s first 8 semesters, not including summer sessions. Recipients must maintain the minimum standards set by the San Antonio A&M Club Foundation in order to continue to receive the scholarship. Attached to this post is a copy of the updated 2019 scholarship application. Additional information about the scholarships and additional applications can be obtained from their website at www.aggiepark.com. Earn a Scholarship through NASCAR NASCAR Clint Bowyer and DEKALB are teaming up to help students cross their "finish line" with the new Left Turns for Learning agricultural scholarship. Eligible FFA high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores, and juniors pursuing an ag-related degree can apply Nov. 1 through Jan. 15, 2020 at FFA.org/scholarships.
