Now that 2022 has arrived and the second semester of the school year is underway, the events and happenings within the AMP will be plenty and the following are for the week of January 3rd. Classes for the second semester will resume on Monday, January 3, 2022. Upcoming Events
2022 North East Ag Fair Schedule of Events for the 2022 North East Ag Fair can be found online at: https://northeastagfair.weebly.com/schedule.html The FFA Booster Club is seeking business and family sponsors for the North East Ag Fair. Sponsorship levels are available from $500 to $2500. NEW FOR THIS YEAR is a 5K Fun Run/Walk that will take place on Saturday, January 8th on the Madison HS/AMP Complex. This is our second year to host an online auction to directly benefit the students that participated in the 2022 North East Ag Fair held January 7-8, 2022. The auction format that is being utilized is a Premium Auction which acts as a fundraiser for the student exhibitors. Bidders will not be purchasing the rights of lease or ownership to the project being offered in the Premium Auction, however, the bidder will simply be making a financial donation to student exhibitors by placing an "Add On" bid to the project being offered. We hope you will spread the word and consider supporting the 2022 North East Ag Fair Premium Auction to reward our students for their time, effort, and finances that they have invested into these agricultural projects. 2022 National Ag Day Essay Contest The theme for this year is American Agriculture: Growing a Climate for Tomorrow. This national essay contest is divided into two categories of competition: written essay and video essay. Both winners will receive $1,000. The contest is open to students enrolled in grades 9 - 12. Guidance and Counseling News Extended After Hours Virtual Tutoring NEISD is providing extended after hours tutoring for high school students from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday through Thursday. Tutoring is available in the following core courses: English I, II, III & IV, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, OnRamps Pre-Calculus, AP Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Just one application is required for multiple scholarship opportunities totaling close to $2 million dollars. Everything students need to successfully complete the application can be found on the scholarship website. The scholarship application closes on January 5, 2022. Texas Farm Credit Scholarship Program Deadline: January 15, 2022 Texas Farm Credit will present $5,000 postsecondary scholarships to ten future ag leaders. Winners will be announced in May 2022. To qualify, an applicant must be a high school senior, be a member of FFA or 4-H, plan to pursue a college degree, submit a current high school transcript, resume, and essay (prompt at link above). Coolidge Scholarship (for current HS Juniors only may apply) Deadline: January 19, 2022 The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that may be used by recipients for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any current high school junior who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2023 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Winners may use the scholarship to pursue any academic major. Academic excellence is the primary criterion considered by the Coolidge Scholarship. Secondary criteria include an interest in public policy and an appreciation of the values President Coolidge championed. Successful candidates will also demonstrate humility and have a record of genuine service to their communities. A complete description of the scholarship’s criteria is available here. The competition for the Coolidge Scholarship is significant -- only a few new Coolidge Scholarships are awarded each year from a pool of candidates that spans the entire country. Even so, students have reported to us in past years they were glad to have applied even if they didn’t win because the experience helped prepare them for college applications later on. Furthermore, the Coolidge Foundation invites one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarship applicants to participate in the Coolidge Senators Program, which includes an all-expenses-paid Summit in Washington, D.C. and a $1,000 scholarship. This year Coolidge Senators met important leaders such as David Malpass, president of the World Bank, and Homer Hickam, the NASA scientist whose own inspiring boyhood formed the basis for the film October Sky. Students also had the chance to meet with key executives in medical science and banking. Scholarship applicants are automatically considered for the Senators Program. Sam J. Riklin Rotary Diploma Plus Program Deadline: January 24, 2022 The purpose of this program is to provide financial assistance to students who are at risk of not graduating from High School due to financial concerns or hardships. This is needs based and is not based on your academic performance. If you are selected, you will receive a $1,000 stipend during your senior year in high school. Qualifications 1) You must be classified as a junior during the 2021-2022 school year. 2) Attend a high school in Bexar County. Corn Producers / Corn Growers Scholarships Deadline: January 31, 2022 Students can apply to scholarships from both the Texas Corn Producers (TCP) and the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) with one application. December James Madison FFA Chapter Meeting The monthly meeting of the James Madison FFA Chapter will be held on Thursday, December 9th at 4:40PM in the AMP Arena. This month's meeting will provide FFA members with two community service opportunities, hot cocoa, and a movie! FFA Greenhand Degree Ceremony - December 9th AMP students receiving their Greenhand FFA Degree will be recognized at a ceremony on Thursday, December 9th at 6:30PM in conjunction with the FFA Booster Club General Meeting. Following the ceremony, there will be a reception for the students and their parents. December FFA Booster Club General Meeting The next monthly meeting of the FFA Booster Club will be Thursday, December 9th at 6:30PM in the AMP Commons. Guidance and Counseling News TX FAME Virtual Open House Students that are interested in a career in Advanced Manufacturing Technology are encouraged to attend the TX FAME Virtual Open House on Saturday, December 11th at 12:00 noon. Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (TX FAME) is a partnership of regional manufacturers whose purpose is to implement dual-track, apprenticeship-style training that will create a pipeline of highly skilled workers. The purpose of TX FAME is to be the catalyst for developing world-class technical talent for manufacturing partners such as HEB, Toyota of Texas, Metalsa, Caterpillar, Navistar, CPS Energy, C.H. Guenther & Son, TTTX, Joyson Safety Systems, Tower Semiconductor, and Kautex. The virtual open house is approximately an hour in length and interested students can ask questions of the program coordinators. Coolidge Scholarship (for current HS Juniors only may apply) Deadline: January 19, 2022 The Coolidge Scholarship is a full-ride, four-year, merit scholarship that may be used by recipients for undergraduate study at any accredited college or university in the United States. Any current high school junior who plans to enroll in college in the fall of 2023 and is an American citizen or legal permanent resident is eligible to apply (current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Winners may use the scholarship to pursue any academic major. Academic excellence is the primary criterion considered by the Coolidge Scholarship. Secondary criteria include an interest in public policy and an appreciation of the values President Coolidge championed. Successful candidates will also demonstrate humility and have a record of genuine service to their communities. A complete description of the scholarship’s criteria is available here. The competition for the Coolidge Scholarship is significant -- only a few new Coolidge Scholarships are awarded each year from a pool of candidates that spans the entire country. Even so, students have reported to us in past years they were glad to have applied even if they didn’t win because the experience helped prepare them for college applications later on. Furthermore, the Coolidge Foundation invites one hundred of the top Coolidge Scholarship applicants to participate in the Coolidge Senators Program, which includes an all-expenses-paid Summit in Washington, D.C. and a $1,000 scholarship. This year Coolidge Senators met important leaders such as David Malpass, president of the World Bank, and Homer Hickam, the NASA scientist whose own inspiring boyhood formed the basis for the film October Sky. FFA Greenhand Degree Ceremony - December 9th AMP students receiving their Greenhand FFA Degree will be recognized at a ceremony on Thursday, December 9th at 6:30PM in conjunction with the FFA Booster Club General Meeting. National FFA SAE Grant Program National FFA Association SAE Grant Program Deadline: November 15, 2021 The National FFA Association has opened the application window for the 2021 Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) Grant Program from now until November 15, 2021. This year, the National FFA has 387 grants to award. In 2020, almost 50% of applicants who completed the application process received a grant. Post-secondary representatives from Texas universities, colleges and technical schools will be in attendance to provide AMP students with information about educational opportunities in agriculture after high school. Representatives will also be in attendance from agencies and employers to share career opportunities with AMP students in the areas of agriculture. 2021-2022 James Madison FFA Dues One of the expectations for every AMP student is to be an active participant in the AMP. Active participation can be achieved by becoming a member of the James Madison FFA (the student leadership organization for AMP students) and participating in any of the literally 100+ FFA activities that will be offered this school year. FFA dues are $20.00 for the entire school year and can be paid (cash or check) in the AMP Administration office. With membership in the FFA, AMP students will have access to outstanding leadership and career development opportunities, supervised agricultural experiences, degrees, awards, and scholarships. FFA members will also receive a James Madison FFA commemorative t-shirt (the supplier of t-shirts has experienced extremely long delays in shipping but we are expecting t-shirts before the Thanksgiving break). JMHS Turkey Trot James Madison HS students and families, James Madison HS cluster schools, and the James Madison HS community are all welcome to attend the first Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk at James Madison High School! It will be held on Saturday morning, November 20th. Check-in begins at 7:00am and race/walk begins at 8:00am. It's a FREE event for all participants. We welcome non-perishable donations of food or gift cards to help fill the JMHS Food Pantry. Please register in advance and wear your costumes to show your spirit of giving back. Last week, eight FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo and represent the state of Texas to compete for national championship titles in the Agricultural Communications and the Nursery / Landscape events. Both teams bested all of the competition in their respective contests and were named National FFA Champions on the big stage at Lucas Oil Stadium on Friday, October 29th! National FFA Association SAE Grant Program Deadline: November 15, 2021 The National FFA Association has opened the application window for the 2021 Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) Grant Program from now until November 15, 2021. This year, the National FFA has 387 grants to award. In 2020, almost 50% of applicants who completed the application process received a grant. The academies are considered among the country’s most prestigious institutions, and gaining admission is rigorous and competitive. Students are required to apply to the academy of their choice directly and pass a general fitness and medical exam. However, before the application process is complete, each student must acquire a congressional nomination. Attached to the blog is a copy of the Service Academy Nomination Application for cadets entering Fall 2022. You may submit your completed application packet by mail along with official academic transcripts and standardized test scores to my San Antonio District Office located at 727 E. Cesar E. Community Service Opportunity The San Antonio Foundation for Equine Education (SAFEE) is a 501(c)(3) that helps people who want equine experiences but do not have access to horses. Currently, they are sponsoring a polo team with students from several local high schools, providing inner-city students with field trips, and are sponsoring an equestrian team from Trinity University. SAFEE is in need of student volunteers for horse shows that they are hosting on December 4, 2021, January 29, 2022, and March 5, 2022. Scholarship Opportunities GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Deadline: January 6, 2022 Honoring the legacy and character of our nation’s 40th President, the GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program rewards college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with financial assistance to pursue higher education. Each year, the Program selects numerous recipients to receive a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years – up to $40,000 total per recipient. Mrs. Cooper Begins as the AMP Administrative Assistant The AMP welcomes Mrs. Norma Cooper as our new AMP Administrative Assistant. Mrs. Cooper formerly served in the James Madison High School Counseling Department as the Data Processor and Counseling Clerk before becoming the AMP Administrative Assistant. National FFA Convention & Expo This week, eight FFA members will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo from October 25th through October 30th. The James Madison FFA members will be representing the state of Texas as they compete for national championship titles in the Agricultural Communications and the Nursery / Landscape events. 2021-2022 James Madison FFA Dues One of the expectations for every AMP student is to be an active participant in the AMP. Active participation can be achieved by becoming a member of the James Madison FFA (the student leadership organization for AMP students) and participating in any of the literally 100+ FFA activities that will be offered this school year. FFA dues are $20.00 for the entire school year and can be paid (cash or check) in the AMP Administration office. With membership in the FFA, AMP students will have access to outstanding leadership and career development opportunities, supervised agricultural experiences, degrees, awards, and scholarships. Coca Cola Scholars Program Deadline October 31, 2021 The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 33rd class in 2021, the Foundation has provided over 6,450 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $75 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.
